I was talking to the Deputy Head of Millfield this morning, and he told
me more about the plans for the new Music School and Concert Hall.
Apparently it is to be built as part of the courtyard just behind the
Art School, and building is to begin in January. The budget is 6
million, and the hall will seat 300, perhaps more if there is no choir,
and so the audience can take up the choir seats.
Apparently the acoustics in the Myer Theatre are not good for
performing music - choir members can't hear the person singing next to
them - and so special care is being taken over the acoustics in the new
hall. And, good news, there's a possibility that subscription concerts
may be held again in Millfield. The school is sensitive to the fact
that the Strode Theatre is the primary cultural centre for Street, but
the theatre is concentrating more on film and other arts these days, so
there is a place for a classical music series elsewhere.
We aren't forgetting that the Parish Church, Holy Trinity, has been the
venue for several concerts already, and more are planned (see the
church web site for
details), and Ben, the go-ahead Head of Music at Millfield, would like
to bring some of his musicians to put on lunchtime concerts there too.
