Among the latest batch of planning applications received by Mendip Council is one from Millfield School to build a new music school and concert hall.

I remember some wonderful concerts in Millfield way back when Geoff Keating was director of music at the senior school, and his wife Helen was director of music in Edgarley. Among the big names was Jack Brymer the clarinettist, who won our affection and admiration by demonstrating just how to play that soaring slide that begins Rhapsody in Blue. Apparently you get your fingers to play the scale faster than your mouth adapts to playing higher notes. Something like that.

Anyhow, Millfield still puts on concerts that are open to the public, and I resolve that I'm going to go to one or more this season. The present concert hall and music school are just by the main gate, and incorporate the old gate-house. I wonder where the new ones are to be built?

Another thing I want to do is walk the public footpath that goes through the Millfield site. I don't know how well it is signposted. I mean the one starting on Somerton Road and leading, I assume, to the Butleigh Road.

While on the subject of Millfield, we had an enjoyable concert put on by pupils in Street Parish Church this summer as part of TrinityFest, and I believe the music staff liked the building so much that they hope to use it for more concerts. I look forward to those.
