Last time I went to Sainsbury's I couldn't park in my usual place. I wondered what was up. I see now in the paper that they are going to expand, and sell hardware, clothes and chemist stuff.
Is that going to be good for Street? Lazy shoppers will no doubt welcome the chance of buying everything in the same place, but it will be bad news for the High Street. We have an excellent kitchenware shop there, that has always supplied me with what I needed. We have a selection of clothes shops. We have two chemists. How many of these shops will be driven out of business by the expanding supermarket?
Supermarkets have a bad reputation for the way they treat farmers who are their suppliers. Walmart-Asda is probably the worst, but I don't think Sainsbury's is entirely blameless. I personally would pay more for milk, for instance, so that dairy farmers may not be put out of business. What do you think?
