A Nottinghamshire blogger named Janet Roberts drew my attention to an article she posted today on http://nottinghamshirenotes.blogspot.com/

It starts with a bronze statuette in London and takes in the First World War exploits of Dr Hilda Clark.

As soon as war broke out she contacted Friends House and on 5th November 1914 a group of 33 crossed the Channel, including 3 doctors, 10 nurses, 2 chemists and a sanitary inspector. Like everyone else, they imagined the war would soon be over, and their intention was to mitigate suffering.

Eventually they reached Chalons-sur-Marne and found a bombed area overrun by refugees.
