View Article  Is the Roman road between Street and Glastonbury disappearing?
This week's Central Somerset Gazette has news of a report on modern farming as destructive of ancient tracks on the Somerset Levels. Apparently ploughing and draining the land has the effect of drying out the waterlogged prehistoric timbers. It is their waterlogged state that has preserved them for so many centuries.   more »

View Article  Did you hear the radio programme on the 1914 Glastonbury Festival?
The local paper gave notice that there would be a programme on Radio 4 today about Rutland Boughton and the first Glastonbury Festivals, but didn't say what time it was. I remembered to turn to the Radio Times at lunchtime to see what time this evening I should listen, and found that it was just about to begin, at 1.30. A bit of luck.   more »

View Article  A lecture I gave
What happened was this: Some time ago I had been asked to rewrite the small History of Street Parish Church. I kept getting phone calls asking when the history would be ready. In the end I volunteered to give a lecture at which the book would be launched, and give the lecture during TrinityFest. (See here for TrinityFest)

About 30 people came to the lecture, and seemed to find it engrossing, so I have put it on the web here.

Copies of the 64 page book were distributed to the audience. They were not bound, and were in black and white. It may take about two months for the completed book to be on sale, all in colour and costing about £3.

View Article  I came away from the Parish Council disturbed and disappointed
Street Parish Council held an open meeting this evening, as mentioned in a previous blog. I didn't count the number of Street residents who turned up, but it was more than the Parish Council expected - more than the number of chairs put out, and more than the copies of the relevant papers available.   more »
